IBM contributed thing which is called class sharing. The thing is simple, you generate class cache which is then used when Java is starting up (and also shared across JVMs). Startups are faster.

How to use this (pretty old) feature? You re loking for -Xshare option:

$ java -X 2>&1 | grep share
-Xshare:off       do not attempt to use shared class data
-Xshare:auto      use shared class data if possible (default)
-Xshare:on        require using shared class data, otherwise fail.

To generate the cache do this:

# java -Xshare:dump

It creates about 25 MB file: /usr/lib/jvm/java-1.7.0-openjdk-1.7.0.9.x86_64/jre/lib/amd64/server/classes.jsa

Although help screen shows OpenJDK should automatically use shared class cache when it is present, this does not work on my Fedora 17. So you need to make sure your app has -Xshare:on in the JVM options. This is a bug perhaps.

How much fast is it? Well, I did not test Eclipse or something like that as I dont use it, but it is measurable even for Hello World:

$ time java -Xshare:on -cp . HelloWorldApp
Hello World!

real    0m0.051s
user    0m0.038s
sys 0m0.012s

$ time java -Xshare:off -cp . HelloWorldApp
Hello World!

real    0m0.076s
user    0m0.061s
sys 0m0.012s

In Windows and MacOS systems, the cache is generated automatically after installation. I have filed a bug for Fedora to do the same: https://bugzilla.redhat.com/show_bug.cgi?id=878181

estuve leyendo en oracle que no es un bug, solo hay que tener permisos de escritura y ejecutar en el path el comando y voilá

Hasta pronto Google Reader

hoy me entere en twitter que ya tiene fecha de caducidad el querido Google Reader, y lo que pude comprobar es que al ingresar a la pagina, automaticamente aparece una ventana advirtiendo que g reader se cierra, por lo pronto lo que se puede hacer es hacer click en la configuracion de google reader y exportar todas las suscripciones a un archivo que se puede guardar en el disco y posteriormente usarlo en otro lector de feeds como liferea http://lzone.de/liferea/

A better browser

Our web browser without a name (Abrowser, a Firefox derivative that does not recommend non-free software) now comes with shiny new features, like full html5 video support (webm, h264 and other formats) that allow to use sites like Youtube without a flash plugin. This version can also show pdf files without a plugin, and implement instant messaging web applications based on WebRTC.

Accessible by default

In the quest for an improved experience for disabled users that we started some releases ago we used to make an special version (the International live DVD) that came with the digital ramps turned on by default. In this release we took that idea one step further and now all the images are equally accessible for visually impaired users: if while booting the live cd you don’t touch any key and let the 30 seconds countdown finish, the screen reader will be on when the desktop is launched.

Extended support

This release is a Long Term Support one, meaning that bugfix and security updates will be published until 2017. Along with this we have decided to change our release schedule from this point on: we will no longer publish short term support versions every 6 months, but focus on giving the best possible support to the LTS release, providing backported improvements to core packages like the kernel, the browser and the xorg server among others. We will also make it easier for volunteers to provide newer versions of extra packages through an optional community-backports repository.
We will publish point releases every 6 months including all improvements done to the system in that time.

How to update

If you are running Trisquel 4.0 or 5.5, a system upgrade will be available in the system updater application (if you run a server use «sudo do-release-upgrade»). If you use Trisquel 4.5 or 5.0 you need to apply each update step (4.5, 5.0, 5.5, 6.0) or upgrade manually. Ask for instructions to an experienced user to do so, in our forums, mailing lists or IRC channels.

How to help

With this release we are maintaining enough sources to produce over a thousand packages adapted to Trisquel to either improve their freedom, user privacy, usability and accessibility among other features. We run all our main resources ourselves (compilation, distribution and web servers) and all our online services run on our own machines to make us completely self contained. This is a big effort, and we would like you to take part in it. We are improving our development services to make room for volunteer hackers to join in a community effort to improve the system, but if you don’t know how to debug or maintain packages you can still contribute by improving the wiki, help others in the forums, translating, or finding and reporting bugs. And if you don’t have time for it you can help by making donations, joining our membership program, or buying gifts in our stores.

les hago llegar una invitación a un evento organizado por los usuarios

de Raspberry Pi de Argentina.

Como sabrán, la Raspberry Pi es una computadora de muy bajo costo,

inicialmente orientada a educación, pero que está siendo usada para un

montón de cosas interesantes. Hay bastante sinergía entre la comunidad

de Python y la de Raspberry Pi, y Eben Upton, uno de los creadores del

proyecto es keynote speaker este año en PyCon US.

¡Se viene la primera RaspberryJam!

Actividades

La Raspberry Pi fue pensada con objetivos educativos: acercar a los

más jóvenes a la computación de bajo nivel, a la programación, etc. La

idea original de hacer una RaspberryJam apunta a reunir gente

alrededor de la Raspberry Pi con los mismos objetivos: “expertos” y

“principiantes”, para compartir experiencias, aprender de otros y

fomentar el desarrollo de conocimiento que eventualmente sirva como

soporte para el aprendizaje.

Los tipos de actividades programadas serán:

Charla / Demo

Duración: 10 a 20 minutos.

Descripción: Presentación de un proyecto, un tema de interés o

demostración de un desarrollo que se esté haciendo.

Idea / Discusión / Apoyo

Duración: 10 minutos. Más tiempo si es en un grupo reducido.

Descripción: Se plantea una idea. Los interesados pueden comentar,

discutir al respecto sobre formas de llevarla a cabo e incluso sumarse

al desarrollo.

Manos a la obra

Duración: La necesaria.

Descripcion: Taller para llevar a la práctica una idea que puede estar

ya probada o a probar en el momento.
